Question 1

What is the difference between Toyota's AWD-i and a Land Cruiser's four-wheel drive?

Accepted Answer

AWD-i adds an electric motor on the rear axle that helps when the front wheels slip, with no mechanical link between the axles. The Land Cruiser uses a fully mechanical system with low-range gearing, built for rough terrain and towing.

Question 2

Did the Toyota RAV4 ever come with a diesel engine?

Accepted Answer

Older generations did, and diesel RAV4s still turn up second-hand. Recent generations are hybrids or plug-in hybrids only, so a diesel RAV4 is always an older car, with a particulate filter that dislikes short trips.

Question 3

What should I check on a used plug-in or electric Toyota SUV?

Accepted Answer

Ask for the charging cable, check that the car charges from both a home socket and a public point, and request a battery report from a Toyota workshop. On the bZ4X, the remaining battery capacity matters more than the mileage.

Question 4

Is a small hybrid SUV like the Yaris Cross economical in town?

Accepted Answer

Yes, it shares the Yaris hybrid system, which does most of its saving in stop-start traffic. The raised driving position and extra ground clearance bring slightly higher motorway consumption than the hatchback.
