Question 1

Toyota hybrid or older D-4D diesel?

Accepted Answer

For driving in Porto and its suburbs, a hybrid uses its electric motor in traffic and avoids a diesel's particulate filter and clutch wear on the hills. A D-4D can still suit long, regular distances, but in Portugal diesels pay an additional IUC charge.

Question 2

Should I worry about rust on a Toyota from the Porto coast?

Accepted Answer

Cars parked for years near the sea, in places like Matosinhos, Vila do Conde or Póvoa de Varzim, are more exposed to salt air. Check the underbody, brake lines and exhaust for corrosion, especially on older models and pick-ups.

Question 3

What changes with a Toyota Hilux?

Accepted Answer

The Hilux is often registered as a light goods vehicle, which has its own IUC category and a different IPO calendar from passenger cars. Check the category on the registration certificate and ask whether the pick-up did farm or building work.

Question 4

How do I check a Toyota hybrid's battery?

Accepted Answer

Ask a Toyota workshop for a hybrid health check, which reads the battery's condition. Under Toyota Relax, servicing in the official network also extends the warranty, and the cover stays with the car.

Question 5

Can I do the transfer and IPO in Porto?

Accepted Answer

Ownership is recorded at the Registo Automóvel, which works the same way anywhere in Portugal, online or at a registry office. The IPO can be done at any approved inspection centre in the country.
