Question 1

How reliable are Toyota hybrids second-hand?

Accepted Answer

Toyota's hybrid system has a strong reputation for durability: the e-CVT has no clutch, and regenerative braking spares the brake pads. The hybrid battery is the costly part, so have its condition checked at a Toyota workshop before buying.

Question 2

Is there still a warranty on the hybrid battery?

Accepted Answer

Toyota has offered extended hybrid battery cover, renewed with each yearly hybrid health check in its network, which can continue on a used car. Ask a Toyota dealer whether it applies to that car and what its service history in the network allows.

Question 3

Do Toyota hybrids pay IUC?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Only battery-electric cars are exempt from IUC, so a Toyota hybrid pays according to its engine size and CO2 emissions.

Question 4

Should I worry about a former TVDE Toyota?

Accepted Answer

Ride-hailing cars cover many kilometres and spend long hours idling, so look at the odometer, the interior wear and the service record together. A hybrid used this way can still be sound if it was serviced on time, but price it for the distance it has done.
