Question 1

Does a diesel Toyota pay more IUC?

Accepted Answer

Yes. On top of the normal IUC, diesel cars in Portugal pay an additional charge, so a diesel costs more to tax each year than the same car with a petrol engine. If you drive little, that can outweigh the fuel saving.

Question 2

What should I check on a Toyota 2.2 D-4D?

Accepted Answer

Early versions of this engine are known for head gasket failure, so look for coolant loss, white smoke or overheating. Ask whether the repair has already been done under a Toyota campaign or by a specialist.

Question 3

Is a diesel Toyota a good city car?

Accepted Answer

Not usually. The particulate filter needs regular longer runs to clean itself, and repeated short trips can clog it. Lisbon's low-emission zone also limits older cars in the city centre.

Question 4

Why are there no recent diesel Corollas?

Accepted Answer

Toyota replaced diesel with hybrid in its European passenger cars, so recent Corollas, Yaris and RAV4 have no diesel option. The newest diesel Toyotas are the Hilux, Land Cruiser and Proace.

Question 5

Does a Toyota Hilux follow the same rules?

Accepted Answer

A Hilux registered as a light goods vehicle has a different IUC category and inspection calendar from a passenger car. Check its registration document before comparing running costs.
