Question 1

What do Porto's streets do to a SEAT?

Accepted Answer

Cobbled surfaces and steep gradients wear suspension bushes, shock absorbers and clutches faster than flat motorway driving. On a test drive, listen for knocks over rough ground and check that the clutch bites cleanly on a hill.

Question 2

Is a SEAT from Galicia worth considering?

Accepted Answer

A car already on Portuguese plates has had its import settled, but one still on Spanish plates must pay ISV and be registered in Portugal first. Include that cost when comparing a Galician price with a local one.

Question 3

When does a SEAT TDI need a new timing belt?

Accepted Answer

The TDI diesels in most SEATs use a cambelt that must be replaced at intervals set by mileage and age. Ask for proof of the last change, since a snapped belt can destroy the engine.

Question 4

What paperwork applies when buying a SEAT in Porto?

Accepted Answer

The change of owner is registered at the Registo Automóvel, and the IUC is then due every year from the new owner. A car old enough to need it must have a valid IPO inspection.
