Does the Opel Astra L 1.2 Turbo have timing belt problems?

The Stellantis-sourced 1.2 Turbo uses a timing belt that runs in oil and can degrade earlier than planned. Check that it has been inspected or replaced on the maker's schedule and that the specified oil was used.

Is the Opel Astra 1.4 Turbo a good engine?

The 1.4 Turbo in the Astra J and K is flexible and widespread, but it has known failures of the crankcase ventilation valve built into the cam cover. A whistle at idle or oil consumption is worth having checked.

Petrol or diesel Opel Astra: which makes more sense?

For low yearly mileage, a petrol Astra avoids particulate filter trouble and the extra diesel charge on the IUC. The diesel pays off mainly for drivers who cover a lot of motorway miles.
