Does the Opel Astra manual gearbox have known problems?

The six-speed M32 gearbox, fitted to the Astra H and J with the stronger engines, is known for worn bearings. A whine in fifth or sixth and a sloppy gear lever are the signs to check on a test drive.

Which Opel Astra engines come with a manual gearbox?

Nearly all of them: the 1.7 and 1.6 CDTI, the 1.5 diesel and the 1.0, 1.2 and 1.4 Turbo petrols. On the older generations automatics are a minority.

When does a diesel Opel Astra need a new clutch?

There is no fixed interval, but on the CDTI engines the dual-mass flywheel is usually replaced together with the clutch. Judder when pulling away or a metallic rattle at idle means both are near the end.
