Question 1

Is a diesel Mercedes-Benz still a good choice in Braga?

Accepted Answer

For regular motorway driving towards Porto or Guimarães, yes: long runs let the particulate filter regenerate. Recent Mercedes-Benz diesels also need AdBlue, so check for warnings on the dashboard and ask whether the SCR system has had any repairs.

Question 2

Can I buy a Mercedes-Benz in Galicia and register it in Braga?

Accepted Answer

Yes, but the car must pay ISV, based on engine capacity and CO2, before it receives Portuguese plates, and ownership is then registered at the Registo Automóvel. When buying a car that has already made the trip, ask for proof that this was done.

Question 3

How often does a used Mercedes-Benz go to the IPO?

Accepted Answer

A light passenger car has its first IPO four years after first registration, then every two years until it is eight, and every year after that. Ask for the latest inspection report, which also records the mileage.

Question 4

Do older Mercedes-Benz models rust?

Accepted Answer

Some do: the E-Class of the late 1990s and early 2000s is known for rust, and the damp climate of the Minho does not help. Later generations are far better protected, but it is still worth looking at the sills, wheel arches and boot floor.
