Question 1

Which automatic gearbox does a used Hyundai have?

Accepted Answer

It depends on the model and engine: petrol versions usually have a dual-clutch (DCT), hybrids a dual-clutch or a conventional automatic, the i10 an automated manual (AMT) and electric cars a single-speed reduction gear. The exact version tells you which, so ask for it before viewing.

Question 2

What should I check on a Hyundai with a dual-clutch gearbox?

Accepted Answer

Drive it in slow traffic and pull away on a slope: it should move off smoothly, without judder, hesitation or a burning smell. Ask whether any gearbox software updates or clutch work have been done at a Hyundai workshop.

Question 3

Does the Hyundai warranty pass to the next owner?

Accepted Answer

Hyundai's European warranty runs for five years with no mileage limit from first registration and stays with the car when it is sold. A complete service record helps if a claim is ever needed.

Question 4

Is the i10 with AMT a real automatic?

Accepted Answer

The AMT is a manual gearbox whose clutch and gear changes are worked by actuators, so there is no clutch pedal. Shifts are slower than in a dual-clutch and come with a noticeable pause, which suits relaxed town driving best.
