Question 1

How do I test a Ford PowerShift gearbox?

Accepted Answer

Drive slowly in traffic and pull away on a slope: shuddering, slipping or clunks between gears point to worn clutches or a faulty control unit. Ask whether a Ford workshop has replaced the clutch or updated the software.

Question 2

Can an older Ford diesel drive into central Lisbon?

Accepted Answer

The low-emission zone around the Avenida da Liberdade, the Baixa and Chiado restricts older cars by their Euro standard on weekdays. If you will drive downtown often, check the city's current rules against the car's registration date.

Question 3

Is a Ford Kuga plug-in hybrid worth it in Lisbon without a garage?

Accepted Answer

Only if you can charge it regularly, at work or on Lisbon's Mobi.E network; on petrol alone it carries the battery's weight and uses more fuel. Ask a Ford dealer to confirm from the chassis number that any recall has been carried out.

Question 4

What should I check on a used Ford Transit or Transit Custom van?

Accepted Answer

Many used Ford vans around Lisbon have worked for businesses, so expect high mileage and wear in the load area. Check the clutch and suspension, and whether the van is registered as a light goods vehicle, which has a different IPO calendar from a passenger car.
