Question 1

Which generation of Focus should I look at?

Accepted Answer

The third generation, from 2011 to 2018, often gives the best balance of price and equipment. The fourth, from 2018, has more space, newer driver assistance and mild-hybrid petrol versions. Second-generation cars are the cheapest, but there age matters more than the model.

Question 2

Is the 1.0 EcoBoost a good engine in the Focus?

Accepted Answer

It is lively and economical, but its timing belt runs in oil and depends on the right oil and on-time changes. Ask for the service record and check that the coolant level stays steady. A car serviced to schedule is a much safer bet.

Question 3

What is the issue with the Focus's PowerShift gearbox?

Accepted Answer

The PowerShift dual-clutch automatic fitted to many third-generation cars is known for judder and hesitation when pulling away. Test it from standstill and in slow traffic, and ask whether it has been repaired or updated. The fourth generation uses a conventional eight-speed automatic instead.

Question 4

Ford Focus hatchback or estate?

Accepted Answer

The estate offers a much larger boot and suits families or anyone who carries a lot. The hatchback is shorter and easier to park in town. Engines and equipment are largely the same on both.
