Question 1

Is the Ford Focus 1.0 EcoBoost engine reliable?

Accepted Answer

It is an economical, award-winning engine, but early units had overheating problems linked to the cooling circuit. Its timing belt runs in oil and degrades if oil changes are missed or the wrong oil is used. A complete service history matters more than usual here.

Question 2

Ford Focus petrol or diesel: which makes more sense?

Accepted Answer

Petrol makes sense for low mileage or mostly town driving, as the engine is simpler to maintain and has no particulate filter. For long motorway distances, a TDCi or EcoBlue diesel uses less fuel. The small displacement of the 1.0 EcoBoost also helps with Portugal's IUC road tax.

Question 3

Which petrol Ford Focus versions are worth looking for?

Accepted Answer

The 125 hp 1.0 EcoBoost balances economy and performance and is the most common in recent generations. The 1.5 EcoBoost gives a loaded estate more pull, and the Focus ST uses larger engines. Since 2020 the 1.0 EcoBoost Hybrid adds a 48-volt mild hybrid system.
