Question 1

Why are estates so common in Portugal?

Accepted Answer

Families and businesses have long favoured them for their space, and many were sold as company cars, often with diesel engines. That makes ex-fleet estates with plenty of motorway miles a common sight on the used market.

Question 2

What should I check in an estate's load area?

Accepted Answer

Open and close the tailgate to test its struts and lock, and look for the wear that heavy loads leave on the boot floor and side panels. The rear should sit level, especially on cars with self-levelling rear suspension.

Question 3

Does an estate cost more to run than a hatchback?

Accepted Answer

Usually only a little. It shares engines with the model it is based on, so the IUC is similar for the same engine and CO2 emissions, though the extra weight can nudge fuel use up.

Question 4

Estate or SUV?

Accepted Answer

An estate sits lower, so it is usually more economical and steadier on the motorway, and its boot is often longer and easier to load. An SUV gives a higher driving position and more ground clearance.
