Question 1

What is the issue with the Citroën 1.2 PureTech timing belt?

Accepted Answer

On the 1.2 PureTech petrol, the timing belt runs in engine oil and on some engines degrades earlier than planned, shedding debris that can block the oil pickup. Ask for proof that it was inspected or replaced, and that the correct oil was used at each service.

Question 2

What should be checked on an older Citroën diesel?

Accepted Answer

Many HDi diesels use a particulate filter that relies on an additive fluid held in a separate tank and topped up at set intervals. Short trips clog it faster, so a warning light or a car that has only done town driving deserves a closer look.

Question 3

Is the Citroën Berlingo really made in Portugal?

Accepted Answer

Yes: the current Berlingo is built at Stellantis' Mangualde plant, in the Viseu district, as well as in Vigo in Spain. It shares its mechanics with the Peugeot Rifter and Partner, Opel Combo and Toyota Proace City.

Question 4

Is a Citroën with hydropneumatic suspension a sensible buy?

Accepted Answer

Many older C5s and the Xantia use hydropneumatic suspension, which rides superbly but needs a workshop that knows it. Check that the car rises evenly after starting and that the spheres have been replaced as they aged.
