Question 1

How do I tell whether a Citroën Berlingo is registered as a car or a van?

Accepted Answer

The Documento Único states the vehicle category. The Berlingo Van is registered as a light goods vehicle, while the passenger Berlingo has five or seven seats. The category decides how the vehicle may be used, so check it matches what you need.

Question 2

Is an ex-work Citroën from Leiria worth buying?

Accepted Answer

It can be, if its history is clear. Ask how it was used, as constant short trips are hard on a diesel's particulate filter and clutch. Invoices from regular servicing matter more than the car's age.

Question 3

What should I check on an automatic Citroën?

Accepted Answer

Many C4 and C5 Aircross versions use the EAT6 or EAT8 automatic gearbox. On a test drive, watch for jerky or delayed shifts, especially when pulling away. Ask whether the gearbox oil has ever been changed.

Question 4

Do electric Citroëns pay IUC in Leiria?

Accepted Answer

No. Fully electric models such as the ë-C4 and ë-C3 are exempt from IUC, as anywhere in Portugal. Check the battery's state of health and that the charging cable comes with the car.
