Question 1

How do I know which automatic a Citroën has?

Accepted Answer

The gear selector and the description usually say: EAT6 or EAT8 marks a torque-converter automatic, while ETG, EGS or BMP points to a robotised manual. On a test drive, a robotised gearbox pauses noticeably between gears, whereas a torque converter shifts without a break.

Question 2

Is a Citroën with the robotised ETG gearbox a bad buy?

Accepted Answer

Not necessarily, but it suits relaxed driving rather than heavy traffic, and its clutch wears like a manual's. Check that it pulls away cleanly, that shifts are not harsh and that no gearbox warning appears.

Question 3

What should I check on a Citroën with the EAT8 gearbox?

Accepted Answer

Drive it from cold and in stop-start traffic: shifts should be smooth, without jolts or delays. Ask whether the gearbox oil has ever been changed, as many specialists advise doing so at high mileage.

Question 4

Are hybrid and electric Citroëns automatic?

Accepted Answer

Yes: electric ë models such as the ë-C4 and ë-Berlingo have a single-speed drive and no clutch, plug-in hybrids use the ë-EAT8, and recent mild hybrids pair the 1.2 petrol with the six-speed e-DCS6 dual-clutch. Fully electric models are also exempt from IUC.
