Question 1

Which engine is the better buy in a used Citroën C3?

Accepted Answer

The 1.2 PureTech petrol is the most common and suits mostly urban driving. The BlueHDi diesel makes more sense for regular motorway trips, for example between Porto and Lisbon, because short city runs are hard on its particulate filter.

Question 2

What is the problem with the Citroën C3's PureTech timing belt?

Accepted Answer

The three-cylinder PureTech uses a timing belt that runs in engine oil, and on some engines it has degraded earlier than expected. Ask for invoices showing inspections or a replacement, and check that oil of the correct specification has been used.

Question 3

Is the C3 practical on Porto's streets?

Accepted Answer

Yes. It is short, has good visibility and light steering, which helps in the Ribeira and the other old districts. Its soft suspension also copes well with cobbles.

Question 4

How is IUC worked out for a Citroën C3?

Accepted Answer

For cars registered from July 2007, IUC is based on engine size and CO2 emissions, so a small petrol C3 sits in the lower bands. The electric ë-C3 is exempt. Before the transfer, confirm that this year's IUC has been paid.
