Question 1

Which Golf engines were affected by the diesel emissions scandal?

Accepted Answer

The EA189 TDI diesels, used notably in the sixth-generation Golf, were recalled for a software update and, on some 1.6 TDI, a small part fitted to the intake. Ask for proof the work was done; a Volkswagen dealer can check it from the VIN.

Question 2

Is the Golf's DSG gearbox reliable?

Accepted Answer

The seven-speed dry-clutch DSG fitted to smaller engines has had clutch and mechatronic faults, which show as jerky starts or hesitation. On a test drive, pull away gently several times and drive in slow traffic.

Question 3

What is a Golf SW?

Accepted Answer

SW is the name used in France for the Golf estate, which has a longer body and a much larger boot. It shares its engines and equipment with the hatchback.

Question 4

Is a used Golf GTE worth it?

Accepted Answer

It makes sense if you can charge at home and keep daily trips short enough to cover on electric power; on long journeys it behaves like a petrol car. It gets Crit'Air 1, and the charging cable should come with the car.
