Question 1

Is a Skoda as reliable as a Volkswagen?

Accepted Answer

Most Skodas use the same engines, gearboxes and electronics as the equivalent Volkswagen, built on shared Volkswagen Group platforms. Reliability therefore follows the engine and gearbox fitted more than the badge.

Question 2

How can I tell whether a used Skoda Octavia or Superb was a VTC car?

Accepted Answer

A very high mileage for its age, a worn driver's seat and a company among the previous owners are the usual signs. Ask the seller for the HistoVec report, which lists past owners and contrôle technique results.

Question 3

Is the Skoda DSG gearbox a weak point?

Accepted Answer

The seven-speed dry-clutch DSG fitted to smaller engines can judder when pulling away once its clutch is worn. A test drive in slow traffic shows it best; the wet-clutch DSG on bigger engines needs its oil changed at the intervals in the service book.

Question 4

Which Crit'Air sticker does a used Skoda get?

Accepted Answer

It depends on fuel and Euro standard: a Euro 5 or 6 petrol gets Crit'Air 1, a Euro 5 or 6 diesel Crit'Air 2, and an electric Enyaq the green sticker. The sticker decides access to low-emission zones (ZFE) in cities such as Paris and Lyon.
