Question 1

How do I know if the dieselgate recall was done on a Golf TDI?

Accepted Answer

It concerns Euro 5 Golfs fitted with the EA189 engine. A Volkswagen dealer can check from the VIN whether the software update was applied, and the service record often mentions it too.

Question 2

Is a DSG gearbox a risk on a used Golf diesel?

Accepted Answer

The six-speed wet-clutch DSG paired with stronger TDIs is generally robust if its oil has been changed on schedule. The seven-speed dry-clutch version, common on lower-powered cars, is more prone to mechatronic and clutch faults, so test it from cold and in slow traffic.

Question 3

Which Crit'Air sticker does a Golf TDI get?

Accepted Answer

Golf diesels registered from 2011 get Crit'Air 2, those from 2006 to 2010 Crit'Air 3, and earlier ones Crit'Air 4. No diesel can reach Crit'Air 1, so check the low-emission zone rules of the cities you use.

Question 4

What paperwork comes with a used Golf in France?

Accepted Answer

The seller gives you the signed certificat d'immatriculation, crossed through with the sale date, and a contrôle technique under six months old for a car over four years old. For diesels the test measures smoke opacity, which a clogged particulate filter can fail.
