Question 1

Can I buy a car in Belgium and register it in Nord?

Accepted Answer

Yes, and many buyers near the border do. A used car from another EU country needs a quitus fiscal from the French tax office before the carte grise can be issued, usually alongside a certificate of conformity. Budget for the carte grise too, which is priced by the car's fiscal horsepower.

Question 2

Does the Crit'Air sticker matter around Lille and the rest of Nord?

Accepted Answer

It can. During pollution episodes the prefecture may restrict traffic by Crit'Air category, and the rules for the Lille metropolis have changed more than once. Check the current ones before buying an older diesel.

Question 3

What paperwork must a seller in Nord hand over?

Accepted Answer

The carte grise crossed through, dated and signed, the certificate of transfer (certificat de cession) and, for a car over four years old, a contrôle technique report less than six months old. A recent certificat de situation administrative confirms the car is not pledged against a debt.

Question 4

Which cars are built in Nord?

Accepted Answer

Toyota builds the Yaris at Onnaing near Valenciennes, and Renault has plants at Douai, which builds electric models, and at Maubeuge, home of the Kangoo. Those models are correspondingly common on the local used market.
