Question 1

Which Mini Cooper engine has a reputation for trouble?

Accepted Answer

The 1.6 petrol developed by BMW and PSA, fitted roughly from 2006 to 2013, is prone to stretched timing chains and high oil consumption. A rattle on a cold start is a warning sign. On cars of those years, proof of a chain replacement is worth a lot.

Question 2

Can I drive a Cooper D in French low-emission zones?

Accepted Answer

That depends on the Crit'Air sticker, and a diesel gets Crit'Air 2 at best. Several French cities restrict such cars in their ZFE. Newer petrol Minis carry Crit'Air 1 and the electric Mini the green sticker.

Question 3

Can I swap the run-flat tyres on a Mini Cooper for conventional ones?

Accepted Answer

Yes, many owners do it for a softer ride. You lose the ability to keep driving after a puncture, and as most Minis carry no spare wheel, a repair kit should go in the boot.

Question 4

Is the electric Mini suited to long journeys?

Accepted Answer

The first Cooper SE has a small battery and is meant mainly for town driving and commuting. If you often use the motorway, check the range and charging speed of the specific car carefully.

Question 5

Which documents does the seller of a Mini Cooper hand over in France?

Accepted Answer

The carte grise, or certificat d'immatriculation, crossed out and signed, together with the declaration of sale. If the Mini is over four years old, a contrôle technique less than six months old is also required.
