Question 1

How much does sea air affect cars in the Manche?

Accepted Answer

Westerly winds carry salt well inland across the Cotentin, so corrosion is not only a problem for seafront cars. Check the sills, subframes, brake lines and exhaust from underneath, and treat freshly painted underbodies with some suspicion.

Question 2

Which roads serve the Manche?

Accepted Answer

The toll-free N13 dual carriageway links Cherbourg with Caen, and the toll-free A84 runs from Caen past Avranches to Rennes. The N174 connects Saint-Lô to both.

Question 3

What does a carte grise cost in the Manche?

Accepted Answer

The regional tax is a rate per fiscal horsepower voted by the Normandy region, the same across the department, plus fixed national fees. The official simulator gives the amount for a particular car.

Question 4

What paperwork comes with a used car in the Manche?

Accepted Answer

As anywhere in France, the seller hands over the signed carte grise, a certificat de cession and a certificate showing the car is free of any lien. A car over four years old also needs a contrôle technique report less than six months old.
