Question 1

What winter equipment is required in Savoie?

Accepted Answer

Under the loi Montagne, most Savoie municipalities require winter tyres, or chains or snow socks carried in the car, from 1 November to 31 March. Only tyres marked with the three-peak mountain snowflake count as winter tyres.

Question 2

Do I need four-wheel drive in Savoie?

Accepted Answer

Front-wheel drive on good winter tyres copes with most valley roads and the main resort routes. Four-wheel drive earns its cost on steep, poorly cleared access roads and for daily trips up to the high resorts.

Question 3

What wears out on a car used in the Savoie mountains?

Accepted Answer

Long descents heat brake discs and pads, and frequent cold starts at altitude are hard on the battery. Salt spread on mountain roads also speeds up corrosion of the underbody and brake lines.

Question 4

Which paperwork applies to a used car bought in Savoie?

Accepted Answer

The seller provides the carte grise and, for a car over four years old, a contrôle technique under six months old. The regional part of the carte grise price is set by the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region.
