Question 1

Are winter tyres compulsory in the Jura?

Accepted Answer

In the mountain communes the prefecture lists under the loi Montagne, mostly in the Haut-Jura, a car needs winter tyres or must carry chains or snow socks from 1 November to 31 March. Only tyres with the mountain-and-snowflake symbol count as winter tyres.

Question 2

What does a Haut-Jura winter do to a car?

Accepted Answer

Long cold spells and salted roads speed up corrosion of brake lines, exhaust and sills, and cold starts are hard on batteries. Look underneath with a torch and ask whether a set of winter tyres comes with the car.

Question 3

Can I buy a car in Switzerland and register it in the Jura?

Accepted Answer

Yes, but Switzerland is outside the EU, so the car must clear French customs, which issue a certificate 846A, before the ANTS issues a carte grise. Import duty and VAT may be due, and the Swiss plates stay with the seller.

Question 4

Which cars suit cross-border commuters from the Jura?

Accepted Answer

Daily trips to Switzerland add up to high annual mileage on hilly, often snowy roads. A frugal car with four-wheel drive or good winter tyres suits the commute, and a commuter's high-mileage car deserves a close look at clutch, brakes and suspension.
