Question 1

What is the difference between a full hybrid and a plug-in?

Accepted Answer

A full hybrid charges its small battery from the engine and from braking, and runs on electricity alone only at low speed and over short distances. A plug-in hybrid has a larger battery charged from a socket and can cover tens of kilometres without the engine, but carries extra weight once the battery is flat.

Question 2

Which Crit'Air sticker does a hybrid get?

Accepted Answer

Plug-in hybrids, and petrol hybrids from Euro 5 onwards, carry Crit'Air 1. A diesel hybrid that does not plug in, such as the early Peugeot HYbrid4 models, falls into Crit'Air 2.

Question 3

What should I check on a used hybrid's battery?

Accepted Answer

Ask what is left of the maker's warranty on the hybrid battery, since some brands extend it when the car is serviced in their network. On a plug-in, compare the electric range on a full charge with the figure when new, and check that the charging cable comes with the car.

Question 4

Does a hybrid save fuel on the motorway?

Accepted Answer

A full hybrid saves most in town and in slow traffic, where it often runs on electricity; at steady motorway speeds the engine does most of the work. A plug-in only delivers its low consumption if it is charged regularly.
