Question 1

What does registering a German-bought car in the Haut-Rhin involve?

Accepted Answer

You need a certificat de conformité from the manufacturer and a quitus fiscal from the tax office, which settles the VAT position. With those and the German registration papers, you apply for a French carte grise through the ANTS.

Question 2

Are winter tyres compulsory in the Haut-Rhin?

Accepted Answer

In the communes designated under the loi Montagne, mostly in the Vosges, cars must have winter tyres or carry chains or snow socks from 1 November to 31 March. Ask whether a second set of wheels comes with the car.

Question 3

Can I drive a car from the Haut-Rhin into German low-emission zones?

Accepted Answer

Germany does not recognise the Crit'Air sticker: its Umweltzonen require the green German Umweltplakette, which can be ordered for a French-registered car. Swiss motorways need their own vignette as well.

Question 4

Which documents does a sale in the Haut-Rhin need?

Accepted Answer

The seller provides the signed carte grise, a certificat de cession and, for a car over four years old, a contrôle technique under six months old. The carte grise is charged at the Grand Est regional rate.
