Question 1

What goes wrong on a used Polo DSG?

Accepted Answer

The seven-speed DSG fitted to lower-powered Polos uses dry clutches, and worn ones judder when moving off or creeping in traffic. Check that it pulls away smoothly from cold and ask whether the gearbox has had any work.

Question 2

Should I avoid the Polo's 1.2 TSI engine?

Accepted Answer

Early 1.2 TSI engines in the fifth-generation Polo used a timing chain that could stretch, later replaced by a belt-driven design. A rattle for a few seconds at cold start is the warning sign, and an invoice for a new chain settles the question.

Question 3

Is a diesel Polo still a good buy in France?

Accepted Answer

A TDI gets Crit'Air 2 at best, so check the rules of any ZFE you drive into regularly. Its particulate filter needs regular longer runs, which makes the petrol TSI the safer choice for mostly urban use.

Question 4

Is the Polo GTI a sensible used buy?

Accepted Answer

It keeps the regular Polo's practicality with a turbocharged petrol engine and, usually, a DSG gearbox, so the same gearbox checks apply. Kerbed wheels and worn tyres hint at hard driving.
