Question 1

Do I need a new registration number if I buy a car in the Gironde?

Accepted Answer

No. In France a car keeps its registration number for life, and the department shown on the plate is the owner's choice rather than proof of where it lives. You only apply online for a carte grise in your name within a month of the sale.

Question 2

What paperwork should a seller in Gironde hand over?

Accepted Answer

The carte grise crossed through, dated and signed, a certificat de cession, and a certificat de situation administrative under 15 days old showing the car is not pledged. A car over four years old also needs a contrôle technique carried out less than six months before the sale.

Question 3

Does the Crit'Air sticker matter in Bordeaux and Gironde?

Accepted Answer

Yes, if you drive into the city. Low-emission rules and pollution-peak restrictions around Bordeaux are applied by Crit'Air class, and older diesels fall into the classes restricted first. The class follows from the fuel and Euro standard shown on the carte grise.

Question 4

What should I check on a car used on the Gironde coast?

Accepted Answer

Around Arcachon, Lacanau and the Médoc beaches, salt air and sand are hard on a car. Look underneath for rust on the brake lines, exhaust and subframe, and for sand in the cabin and the air filter.
