Question 1

What is the Fiat Dualogic gearbox?

Accepted Answer

It is a conventional manual gearbox whose clutch and gear changes are worked by a hydraulic actuator. Shifts are slower than in a true automatic, and easing off the throttle slightly during a change makes them smoother.

Question 2

What goes wrong with the Fiat Dualogic gearbox?

Accepted Answer

The hydraulic pump and actuator are the known weak points, along with clutch wear. On a test drive, watch for warning lights, hesitation when engaging first or reverse, and a pump that keeps running while the car is stationary.

Question 3

Is a DCT Fiat better than a Dualogic one?

Accepted Answer

The dual-clutch DCT changes gear faster and more smoothly, and it suits the longer journeys a 500X or Tipo often covers. It still needs its oil changes, so ask for proof that they were done.

Question 4

Does a used automatic Fiat need a contrôle technique?

Accepted Answer

Yes: when the car is over four years old, the seller must provide a contrôle technique carried out within the last six months. The inspection does not test the gearbox in depth, so a test drive remains essential.
