Question 1

Which Crit'Air sticker does a diesel car get?

Accepted Answer

A Euro 5 or Euro 6 diesel gets Crit'Air 2, a Euro 4 diesel Crit'Air 3, and older ones a lower category. The Euro standard and first registration date are on the carte grise.

Question 2

Is a diesel still worth buying in France?

Accepted Answer

It pays off if you regularly cover long distances, where diesels are economical. For mostly urban driving, low-emission zones and particulate filter problems make a petrol, hybrid or electric car the safer choice.

Question 3

What is AdBlue on a diesel and why does it matter?

Accepted Answer

AdBlue is a urea solution that most Euro 6 diesels inject to cut nitrogen oxides, kept in a separate tank. If it runs empty or the system fails, the car warns the driver and may refuse to restart, so look out for related warning lights.

Question 4

What should I check on a diesel's particulate filter?

Accepted Answer

Ask how the car has been used: a diesel driven mainly on short urban trips rarely gets the chance to clean its filter. Warning lights, loss of power or frequent regeneration are signs that the filter or the EGR valve needs attention.
