Question 1

Which Crit'Air sticker does a petrol BMW get?

Accepted Answer

Petrol cars meeting Euro 5 or Euro 6, broadly those first registered from 2011, get Crit'Air 1. Euro 4 petrol cars, registered roughly between 2006 and 2010, get Crit'Air 2.

Question 2

Do BMW petrol engines have known weak points?

Accepted Answer

Some four-cylinder petrol engines of the early 2010s, such as the N13 and N20, are known for timing chain wear. A rattle at start-up is the warning sign, and a record of the chain being replaced is reassuring.

Question 3

Is a petrol BMW a better choice than a diesel?

Accepted Answer

For mostly short or urban journeys it usually is, since a diesel's particulate filter needs longer runs to clean itself, and petrol cars get a better Crit'Air class. High-mileage motorway drivers may still find a diesel cheaper to run.

Question 4

Why is the carte grise dearer on a six-cylinder BMW?

Accepted Answer

The registration fee is based on fiscal horsepower, which rises with engine output and CO2 emissions, multiplied by your region's rate. A powerful six-cylinder therefore costs noticeably more to register than a three- or four-cylinder model.
