Question 1

What should I check on a used BMW cabrio's roof?

Accepted Answer

Run the roof up and down several times and make sure it moves smoothly and latches without a warning light. Water marks in the boot or footwells point to worn seals or blocked drains, and a struggling hydraulic pump is a bad sign.

Question 2

Is a folding hard top better than a fabric hood on a BMW convertible?

Accepted Answer

The metal roofs of the E93 3 Series, F33 4 Series and E89 Z4 are quieter and more secure, but they are heavier and take much of the boot when folded. A fabric hood is lighter and leaves more luggage space, though the material and rear window age with time.

Question 3

Which Crit'Air sticker does a used BMW cabrio get?

Accepted Answer

Petrol models first registered from 2011 get Crit'Air 1, while diesel convertibles such as the 320d or 420d get Crit'Air 2 at best. Older cars get a higher number, which can keep them out of some low-emission zones.

Question 4

What paperwork comes with a BMW convertible bought in France?

Accepted Answer

The seller hands over the signed carte grise and a certificat de cession, and you re-register the car online with the ANTS. A car over four years old must also come with a contrôle technique less than six months old.
