Question 1

Which BMW models come as an estate?

Accepted Answer

The estate version of a BMW is called Touring, and it has been offered mainly on the 3 Series and the 5 Series. The latest 5 Series also comes as the fully electric i5 Touring, and the M3 and M5 have been made as Touring models too.

Question 2

Can a diesel BMW Touring enter French low-emission zones?

Accepted Answer

Diesels meeting Euro 5 or Euro 6 receive the Crit'Air 2 sticker, which the local rules of each ZFE can restrict. If you often drive into a large city, a petrol, plug-in hybrid or electric Touring leaves more room.

Question 3

What is worth checking on an older diesel BMW estate?

Accepted Answer

The 2.0-litre N47 diesel fitted from around 2007 to 2011 is known for timing chain wear, which is costly to fix because the chain sits at the gearbox end of the engine. Listen for a rattle and ask whether the chain has been replaced.

Question 4

Do BMW Touring models have air suspension?

Accepted Answer

The 5 Series Touring has long used self-levelling air springs at the rear, which keep the car level under load. On an older car, check that it sits evenly and that the compressor works.
