Question 1

Which electric BMW models can I buy used?

Accepted Answer

The i3 city car was built from 2013 to 2022, and the iX3, i4 and iX followed from 2020. More recent arrivals include the iX1, iX2, i5 and i7.

Question 2

How can I judge the battery of a used electric BMW?

Accepted Answer

Ask for a state-of-health reading from a BMW workshop or an independent diagnostic. BMW covers the high-voltage battery for eight years or 160,000 km, so the first registration date on the carte grise tells you what remains.

Question 3

Which Crit'Air sticker does an electric BMW get?

Accepted Answer

A fully electric car gets the green Crit'Air sticker for zero-emission vehicles, which opens every French low-emission zone. For an i3 with range extender, check the energy type on its carte grise before ordering the sticker.

Question 4

What should I know about the BMW i3 range extender?

Accepted Answer

The REx version carries a small petrol engine that only generates electricity when the battery runs low. It needs servicing like any engine, so ask whether it has been looked after, even if the owner rarely used it.
