Question 1

Which automatic gearbox does my Audi have?

Accepted Answer

S tronic is a dual-clutch gearbox used across much of the range. Tiptronic is a conventional torque-converter automatic found on larger, more powerful and many quattro models, while multitronic is the CVT of older front-wheel-drive A4, A5 and A6.

Question 2

Does an Audi S tronic gearbox need servicing?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Audi sets fluid changes for its wet-clutch dual-clutch gearboxes, and a missed one can lead to jerky shifts at low speed. Ask for the invoice, and on the test drive pay attention to pulling away and parking manoeuvres.

Question 3

Is the Audi multitronic CVT one to avoid?

Accepted Answer

It is no reason to rule a car out, but it is the gearbox to inspect most carefully: judder from standstill or a slipping feel under load are warning signs. A complete record of fluid changes counts for more here than with the other two types.

Question 4

Which Crit'Air sticker will an automatic Audi get?

Accepted Answer

It depends on fuel and Euro standard, not on the gearbox: a petrol from Euro 5 onwards or a plug-in hybrid gets Crit'Air 1, a Euro 5 or 6 diesel Crit'Air 2, and an electric e-tron the green Crit'Air 0 sticker.
