Is a manual Audi A1 a better buy than an S tronic?

For a used car it is often the safer choice: a manual gearbox avoids the mechatronic and clutch-pack repairs of the dual-clutch unit. The S tronic is easier in heavy traffic, so the choice depends on where you drive.

Is the Audi S1 only available with a manual gearbox?

Yes, the S1 quattro was sold only with a six-speed manual, its 2.0 TFSI driving all four wheels. Check the clutch and the four-wheel-drive coupling, especially on cars driven hard.

Was the diesel Audi A1 sold with a manual gearbox?

Yes, the first-generation TDI engines were offered with a manual gearbox. The second-generation A1 has no diesel at all, so a manual diesel A1 always dates from before 2018.
