Question 1

What does the Riviera climate do to a used car in Alpes-Maritimes?

Accepted Answer

Strong sun fades paint, cracks dashboards and hardens door and window seals, and salty sea air attacks exposed metal underneath. A car kept in a garage or underground car park usually ages better than one parked on the street by the coast.

Question 2

Do winter rules apply in Alpes-Maritimes?

Accepted Answer

Yes, in the mountain communes the prefecture lists under the loi Montagne. From 1 November to 31 March, a car there must have winter tyres or carry chains or snow socks, which matters if you drive up to ski resorts such as Isola 2000 or Auron.

Question 3

Does the Crit'Air sticker matter in Nice and Alpes-Maritimes?

Accepted Answer

During pollution episodes, the prefecture can limit traffic by Crit'Air class across the Nice and Cannes area, and older diesels are the first kept off the road. Check which sticker a car qualifies for before buying.

Question 4

Can I buy a car in Italy and register it in Alpes-Maritimes?

Accepted Answer

Yes. A car from another EU country needs its certificate of conformity and a quitus fiscal from the French tax office before the ANTS issues a carte grise. Make sure the foreign registration document comes with the car.
