Question 1

Can a Volkswagen without a DGT label drive in Madrid?

Accepted Answer

Madrid's low-emission zone covers the whole municipality, and cars without a label are restricted across it, with stricter rules in the Distrito Centro and Plaza Elíptica. Petrol Volkswagens from before 2001 and diesels from before 2006 usually have no label, so check it before buying.

Question 2

Which Volkswagen diesels were affected by the emissions recall?

Accepted Answer

The recall covered TDI engines of the EA189 family, fitted to many Volkswagens built until 2015. Volkswagen offered a free software update, and an official dealer can confirm from the VIN whether it was applied.

Question 3

Do I pay ITP when buying a used Volkswagen in Madrid?

Accepted Answer

In a private sale the buyer pays the Impuesto de Transmisiones Patrimoniales to the Comunidad de Madrid before the DGT transfer. Buying from a dealer carries no ITP.

Question 4

When does a used Volkswagen need its ITV?

Accepted Answer

A car is first inspected four years after registration, then every two years until it turns ten, and every year after that. The date of the next inspection is on the car's ITV card.
