Question 1

Is a Volkswagen bought in the Canaries taxed differently?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Dealers charge IGIC, the Canary Islands' indirect tax, instead of VAT, and a private sale pays ITP to the regional tax agency. Ownership is still transferred through the DGT, as anywhere in Spain.

Question 2

Can I take a Volkswagen registered in Las Palmas to the peninsula?

Accepted Answer

You can, but in some cases the move brings a bill for the difference in indirect and registration taxes. If that is the plan, check with a gestoría before buying.

Question 3

What wears faster on Volkswagens in the islands?

Accepted Answer

Sun and salt attack paint, rubber seals, wiper blades and headlamp lenses, and the steep roads of Gran Canaria work brakes and clutches hard. On Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, wind-blown dust makes the air filter worth checking.

Question 4

Are former rental Volkswagens a good buy?

Accepted Answer

They are often recent and serviced on schedule, but many drivers have handled them, so check the bodywork, clutch and tyres closely. The DGT vehicle report shows whether the first owner was a rental company.
