Question 1

What kind of automatic gearbox does a Volkswagen have?

Accepted Answer

Most use DSG, a dual-clutch gearbox that shifts quickly and uses less fuel than a traditional automatic. Larger models such as the Touareg use a torque-converter Tiptronic, and the electric ID models drive through a single fixed ratio.

Question 2

What should I check on a used DSG Volkswagen?

Accepted Answer

Drive it slowly in stop-start traffic and when parking, where a worn clutch or a failing mechatronic unit shows up as judder or hesitation. A gearbox warning on the dashboard or jerky shifts from cold are reasons to have it inspected before buying.

Question 3

Does a Volkswagen DSG gearbox need servicing?

Accepted Answer

Wet-clutch DSG gearboxes need their oil and filter changed at the intervals in the service schedule, and skipping it shortens their life. Ask for the invoices; the dry-clutch seven-speed has no such routine change.

Question 4

Which automatic Volkswagen gets the best DGT label?

Accepted Answer

Electric ID models carry the zero-emissions label, and plug-in eHybrid versions get either the zero label or ECO depending on their electric range. Petrol and diesel automatics get C or B according to registration date and emissions standard.
