Question 1

What does the Alicante sun do to a used Volkswagen?

Accepted Answer

Years parked outdoors fade the paint on the roof and bonnet, dry out rubber seals and crack dashboard plastics. Test the air conditioning on a hot day; if it cools weakly, a leak or a tired compressor is often the cause.

Question 2

Can I buy a Volkswagen on foreign plates?

Accepted Answer

Yes, but it must first be registered in Spain, with an import ITV and registration tax where it applies, before the DGT records you as owner. Allow for that time and cost, or choose a car already on Spanish plates.

Question 3

Do I need a DGT label to drive in Alicante?

Accepted Answer

Spanish municipalities of over 50,000 inhabitants are required to set up low-emission zones, and the DGT label decides which cars may enter. Before buying an older diesel, check its label on the DGT record.

Question 4

Private seller or dealer in Alicante?

Accepted Answer

A private sale pays ITP to the Generalitat Valenciana, and the seller answers only for hidden defects; a dealer must give a guarantee on a used car and includes VAT in the price. Either way the transfer goes through the DGT.
