Question 1

Which petrol engine is best in a used Volkswagen Polo?

Accepted Answer

The 1.0 TSI in 95 or 110 hp form is the best all-rounder in the current Polo, lively and economical. The 1.0 MPI without a turbo is simpler and cheaper but slow outside town. On older Polos, prefer the belt-driven 1.2 TSI from around 2014 over the early chain-driven one.

Question 2

What problems do older Volkswagen Polo petrol engines have?

Accepted Answer

The early 1.2 TSI, up to around 2012, could suffer timing chain stretch, and the three-cylinder 1.2 MPI of the 2000s had chain trouble too. Listen for a rattle on a cold start and ask for the service history. Later engines with a timing belt are less troublesome.

Question 3

Is a petrol Volkswagen Polo GTI expensive to run in Spain?

Accepted Answer

More than a normal Polo: it uses more fuel, needs larger tyres and brakes, and its power raises the municipal IVTM, which is based on fiscal horsepower. Insurance also costs more for younger drivers. Recent GTIs usually have a 2.0 TSI with a DSG gearbox.
