Question 1

Is a manual Volkswagen Polo better than the DSG?

Accepted Answer

For most buyers, yes: it costs less to maintain and avoids the dry-clutch DSG fitted to TSI automatics, whose mechatronic unit can fail at high mileage. The DSG makes sense mainly for heavy city traffic. A manual Polo is also far easier to find.

Question 2

How do I check the clutch on a used manual Volkswagen Polo?

Accepted Answer

Pull away on a slope and accelerate hard in a high gear: if the revs rise without the car speeding up, the clutch is slipping. On TDI diesels, listen for a rattle at idle, a sign of a worn dual-mass flywheel. Replacing both is a significant cost, so factor it into the price.

Question 3

Should I worry about an ex-rental manual Volkswagen Polo in Spain?

Accepted Answer

Not necessarily, as rental Polos are usually serviced on schedule, but they may have had many drivers and hard city use. The DGT vehicle report shows previous owners, ITV results and recorded mileage. Check the clutch and gearbox with particular care.
