Question 1

Should I choose the Passat saloon or the Variant?

Accepted Answer

The Variant estate trades the saloon's profile for a larger, squarer boot. The latest generation is built only as an estate, so any saloon comes from an earlier one.

Question 2

Which DGT label does a used Passat get?

Accepted Answer

A TDI needs Euro 6, roughly from 2015, for the C label; earlier Euro 4 and 5 diesels get B. TSI petrol cars from Euro 4 carry C, and the GTE plug-in hybrid is ECO or CERO depending on its electric range.

Question 3

What should I check on a Passat with a DSG gearbox?

Accepted Answer

Drive it from cold and in slow traffic: changes should be smooth, without judder or hesitation. The wet-clutch DSG fitted to the stronger engines needs its oil changed at Volkswagen's intervals, so look for that in the service record.

Question 4

Does a diesel Passat use AdBlue?

Accepted Answer

Most Euro 6 2.0 TDI Passats clean their exhaust with AdBlue, topped up from a separate tank every few thousand kilometres. Take the low-level warning seriously, because once the tank is empty the engine will not restart.
