Question 1

Which Golf generation should I look at?

Accepted Answer

The Golf VII, sold from 2012 to 2020, has simple physical controls and a long track record. The Golf VIII, from 2020, adds mild-hybrid eTSI engines and more driver assistance, but early cars had infotainment software faults, so check that the updates have been installed.

Question 2

Is the DSG gearbox in a used Golf reliable?

Accepted Answer

The seven-speed dry-clutch DSG fitted to the smaller engines can judder when pulling away or creeping in traffic, so test it in stop-start driving. The wet-clutch versions on more powerful engines are more robust, but need their gearbox oil changed at the intervals Volkswagen sets.

Question 3

Which DGT label does a used Golf get?

Accepted Answer

Petrol Golfs registered from 2006 and Euro 6 diesels usually carry the C label. The mild-hybrid eTSI is ECO, while the e-Golf and, given enough electric range, the GTE are CERO.

Question 4

What about diesel Golfs affected by the emissions scandal?

Accepted Answer

The 1.6 and 2.0 TDI engines of the EA189 family, found in the Golf VI and the earliest Golf VII, were recalled for a software update. A Volkswagen dealer can confirm from the chassis number whether the work was done.
