Question 1

Can I drive a van on a standard car licence?

Accepted Answer

Yes, a B licence covers vans up to 3,500 kg maximum authorised mass and up to nine seats including the driver. Heavier versions, such as some long-wheelbase vans with a higher gross weight, need a C1 licence.

Question 2

How often does a goods van need an ITV?

Accepted Answer

A van registered for goods up to 3,500 kg has its first ITV at two years, then every two years until six, every year until ten and every six months after that. A van registered as a passenger car follows the car calendar instead, which its ficha técnica shows.

Question 3

What is a combi or mixto van?

Accepted Answer

A vehículo mixto adaptable carries both passengers and cargo, with folding or removable rear seats, and is registered as a category of its own. Its papers state how many seats it may use, which counts at the ITV.

Question 4

Will an older diesel van get into low-emission zones?

Accepted Answer

That depends on the DGT label: a diesel van usually gets the C label only from Euro 6, and one without a label is barred from a growing number of zones. You can check the label by number plate on the DGT website before buying.
