Question 1

Is a Toyota hybrid a real automatic?

Accepted Answer

It drives like one: there is no clutch pedal, and the selector offers only drive, reverse and neutral. Instead of fixed gears it uses a planetary e-CVT that blends engine and electric motor, which is why the engine revs high and steady when you accelerate hard.

Question 2

Which DGT label does an automatic Toyota get?

Accepted Answer

Self-charging hybrids get the ECO label, and plug-in hybrids with at least 40 km of electric range get CERO. A petrol automatic without hybrid assistance usually gets C, and older diesel automatics B or C depending on their Euro standard.

Question 3

How can I tell if a used Toyota was a taxi?

Accepted Answer

Toyota hybrids are popular taxis in Spain, and a former taxi has usually covered a lot of kilometres for its age. The DGT vehicle report shows past owners and the odometer readings recorded at each ITV, and a company as previous owner is a clue.

Question 4

How long does a Toyota hybrid battery last?

Accepted Answer

Toyota's hybrid batteries have a good record for durability, but age and heat take their toll, especially on early Prius and Auris models. A Toyota workshop can run a hybrid system check, and servicing in the brand's network can extend the battery cover.

Question 5

Which Toyotas have a conventional automatic?

Accepted Answer

The Land Cruiser and the Hilux pick-up use torque-converter automatics with fixed gears, suited to towing and off-road work. Some older small Toyotas, such as the Aygo and Yaris, were offered with an automated manual, which shifts more slowly and less smoothly than a hybrid.
