Question 1

How is a used car transferred in Tarragona?

Accepted Answer

The change of ownership goes through the DGT, at the Jefatura Provincial de Tráfico in Tarragona or online, once the ITP has been settled. The car also needs a valid ITV.

Question 2

Who collects the ITP on a private car sale in Tarragona?

Accepted Answer

In Catalonia the transfer tax is managed by the Agència Tributària de Catalunya, which sets its own rate, worked out on the higher of the price and the official tax value. A dealer sale includes VAT instead and carries no ITP.

Question 3

What does the sea air do to cars in Tarragona?

Accepted Answer

Years near the sea speed up rust on the underbody, brake lines, exhaust and suspension mounts. Look under the car, or have a workshop put it on a lift, before buying one that has lived in Salou, Cambrils or Tarragona itself.

Question 4

How can I tell if a used car in Tarragona was a hire car?

Accepted Answer

On a coast busy with hire fleets, it is worth asking how the car was used. The DGT vehicle report, requested by number plate, shows the previous owners and the type of use the car was registered for, including hire without a driver.

Question 5

Does the DGT label matter in Tarragona and Reus?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Both cities exceed 50,000 inhabitants and must set up low-emission zones, so the label decides where a car may enter. Check it by number plate on the DGT website before buying.
