Question 1

Why do all four tyres on a Subaru need to match?

Accepted Answer

Permanent all-wheel drive links both axles, so tyres of different diameter keep the centre differential and transmission working against each other. Replace them as a set of four, or at least make sure the tread depth is close on all of them.

Question 2

Which used Subarus get the ECO label?

Accepted Answer

The e-Boxer hybrids, such as the Forester and XV e-Boxer, carry the DGT's ECO label and so have easier access to low-emission zones. Petrol and diesel Subarus get the B or C label, depending on their Euro standard.

Question 3

Is a Subaru boxer diesel a sensible buy?

Accepted Answer

Subaru sold a 2.0 boxer diesel in Europe for about a decade, in models such as the Forester, Outback and XV. Its particulate filter needs regular longer runs to regenerate, so it suits drivers who use motorways more than town streets.

Question 4

What should I check on a Subaru with the Lineartronic gearbox?

Accepted Answer

Ask whether the CVT fluid has ever been changed and keep the receipts. On the test drive, pull away gently and listen for judder or whining, which point to a gearbox that needs attention.
